Not a big blockbuster, a small British TV movie, and totally worth talking about. Spoiler free! Hello Story Lovers, this time I'm here to talk about this little film I came across a few years ago...and well, yes...it was because Emma Watson is in it.
But this movie is so much more than Emma. I mean, she's amazing and I know we all love her, but this movie has so much more to offer!
So...

Ballet Shoes tells the story of Pauline, Petrova and Posy, three orphan girls from different countries that end up in London, after being picked up by Gum, a paleontologist, who travels around the world. Instead of bringing a t-shirt or keychain for her niece Sylvia (which is what normal people do), Gum ends up bringing the babies as a sort of souvenir. Sylvia, with such a kind heart, raises them without complaint.
Apart from the challenge of raising three babies on her own, this story takes place during The Great Depression, setting both an economical and social challenge for all the women in this film. Still, their lack of money and opportunities don't stop them from having a dream to go after: Pauline wants to be an actress, Petrova loves engines and wants to fly an airplane, and Posy dreams of becoming a ballet dancer.
This is why the three sisters decide to make a pact: no matter what it takes, they'll make their dreams come true.

With this said, and by looking at the poster, I believe you can tell that the tone of the film is sweet and inspiring.
It's not the typical Hollywood movie. There are no explosions, robots or superheroes, at least not in the traditional sense. It actually tells a story of a broken family of women who came together by pure chance and have something worth fighting for; a story that's totally relatable to all women struggling to find their way in the world.

Even though the three sisters are the main characters of the film, is the sweet and soft-spoken Sylvia who holds the plot together. Yes, it's the unbreakable bond between the sisters which gives them the strength to find what they need, but behind that love, it all comes down to Sylvia, a humble woman who decided to give the little she had to three baby orphans. You could say her role is invisible, yet powerful.
This is quite a strong message, and more so since almost the entire cast is constituted by women, as well as directed by one: Sandra Goldbacher. It's truly empowering to see that no matter how hard life gets for them, no man is needed to come to their rescue. They are all they need to overcome their demons and slay their dragons, which is something that applies to all women from all ages, backgrounds, and cultures, no matter what year we're talking about.
We all need a bit of inspiration throughout our lives, and if you are in need of some, then Ballet Shoes is the spoon full of sugar that'll help you swallow that bitter taste of frustration.
Ok, I'll stop babbling about the film so you can go and see it. Trust me when I say, it is worth your time. Of course, you can always come back and let me know if you agree with me!
Just a quick PS for you: Opportunities are out there...you just have to be willing to grab them as soon as they come into view, because you know what? Dreams do come true.
Your friend,
Camila
