Even if you are a bookaholic like I am, there comes a time in life when you just can't seem to have the will to read...weird, I know! And those moments come more often than expected sometimes and I really do hate them. So I decided to do a post about them to share with you guys my experience and give you tips about these so called reading slumps.

WHY?

There isn't just one reason or cause for a reading slump...it really depends on the person. I can talk from my experience though, that the times I've fallen into one either I:

  • Got stuck reading a tedious book, too long (sometimes even boring) which took away the enjoyment of reading! Brick Books.

  • Got obsessed with a TV series that took way too much of my time...so I preferred binge watching it than sitting and reading some book.

  • Had no idea what to read next...A very, very real and serious issue.

  • Had a bad time/situation going on in my life...emotionally speaking.

  • Feeling uninterested about reading something else after finishing a book series I loved. I don't want to say goodbye to those characters. It has happened to me so many times...with The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments, with The Dark Elements, Harry Potter, GoT and Sherlock Holmes. I have attachment issues sometimes.

Anyhow...I always find my way back to books, enjoying them as much as ever!

How?

Well, you see...now that I know this tends to happen quite a lot to me, I know what I can do to get out of that hell hole called reading slump.

First....don't fear them! They are temporary and will pass...they are not a terminal condition. The first time I had one, I really though I got tired of the whole reading thing for good and I was kind of freaking out! I hadn't heard about them and I didn't know what to do with it. So, if you find yourself in this pickle:

  1. Don't freak out.

  2. Accept it!

  3. Try to figure out why it's happening.

  4. If a brick book has the fault, try to take a break from it and grab a light-reading book. When you feel you can and want to go back to your brick, do it! But take it slow, to your own rhythm.

  5. If it's about a TV series (like it happens to me...) see if you can binge watch it and then go back to reading. Maybe you can read in between binge-watching episodes or between TV series...I can't. It's not in my nature! I have to wear down my obsession with the series first to resume my reading and viceversa.

  6. If it's about not knowing what to read next...well there's the internet! Look up for book recommendations. Or easier still...come to this blog and find your next book! You can even write to me for a personalized book recommendation...yes, I do that.

  7. If it's about something emotional, don't push it. If you don't feel like reading, don't. You don't want to pressure yourself into reading when you're not feeling it. Take your time to deal with what's happening in your life at that moment. Sometimes reading helps with catharsis, but that's totally up to you and it depends on the situation you're in as well.

  8. If you just finished what might have felt like the best book series ever and you feel there's no better book out there for you...maybe you have to give it a day or two (a week maybe?) To feel the loss of those characters. They will always be there, but you won't be reading about them anymore and that is a loss. When you're ready to move on and turn the page, do it! Remember there're so many characters and stories out there waiting to be discovered by you.

Something that happens to me: I really can't read more than one book at a time...except when I have a brick book and I have to give it a break by reading something light. I love to dive completely into one story and devote my time to those characters. So, when a book doesn't catch my total attention, I slip into a reading slump. Sometimes, I have to stop reading it all-together for me to avoid the slump.

I'm not proud of it.

Yeah, so that's what I can tell you guys about reading slumps. I hope it helps you and if you've had one that hasn't been mentioned here, please tell me about it! I would love to know and talk about it with you! Maybe I can help...

Your friend,

Camila
